Mannheim
In this section you will find some useful information about the city, as well as many tips and hints connected with living here.
General information:
With 327,318 inhabitants Mannheim is the second-largest city in the state of Baden-Württemberg after the capital Stuttgart. It is situated at the confluence of the rivers Rhine and Neckar, in the northwestern corner of the state of Baden-Württemberg. The Rhine separates Mannheim from the adjacent Rhineland-Palatinate city of Ludwigshafen. The Hessian border is north of the city. Mannheim is the largest city of the Rhine Neckar Area, a metropolitan area with 2.4 million inhabitants.
First things to do
Like in every country of EU, staying longer than 3 months requires "trip" to City Office and registering. Things necessary to get residence permission are as following: passport (even if you are EU citizen, personal ID is not enough!), and contract of renting a room in dormitory or any evidence that proves that you live somewhere in the city.
BurgerDienst Stadt Mannheim
K7 68159 Mannheim
Here you can find all necessary information:
Einwohnermeldeamt.
But the very first thing is to visit your Erasmus Coordinator. He will provide you with keys to your apartment (if you filled application form for room in dormitory first), and contract of housing. This contract includes:
- 2 forms of renting a room (already filled with data, only datum and signature are needed);
- Statement of account number.
It is strongly recommended to open a German account. Firstly, you will have no problems with transferring money, secondly it is not always possible to pay with your polish credit card. The most popular banks are: Deutsche Bank, Postbank, Dresdner Bank. They provide students' accounts, which are free of charges. Remember that opening of account requires about 3 weeks time. In first week you will get your account number, few days later PIN to Online Banking, week later a credit card and another week after it a PIN to your credit card. It is done in such a manner due to security.
After obtaining the account number, fill the form in your housing contract and send everything to Studentenwerk, which rents rooms in dorms.
Public transport
Mannheim is divided into zones. However, zones are such small that single tickets will cost you a fortune. BA will provide you with temporary student ID. It allows to buy so called SemesterTicket, which cost about 120 Euros, but lasts for 6 months and includes all zones.
It is extremely advised to get this ticket, while one for single ride (Einzelticket) will cost you 2,20 Euro.
